Roman Empire, Constantine for his Wive Fausta, Bronze Coin (obverse) Roman Empire, Constantine for his Wive Fausta, Bronze Coin (reverse)

Flavia Fausta was engaged to Constantine (307-337) at the age of about ten. The reverse of this follis shows her with the two of her children in her arms. She thus had her female mission to which this coin refers: She guaranteed the survival of the Roman Empire by giving birth to two potential successors of Constantine. This is, what our inscription SALVS REI PVBLICAE (= welfare or the state) means.
