Most currencies developed from articles of every day use. Especially objects essential for survival were considered valuable. Weapons are a good example for this. Yet what warrior or hunter would want to give his weapon for every larger purchase? This is why special forms developed that were used exclusively as means of payment. These two hunting spears originate from Nigeria. They are the archetypes for spear money: objects that are useless for hunting or for warfare, but that the members of a trade society accept as valuable means of payment nevertheless.
