Sestertius made of brass

The First Numismatics of Europe

Ancient Greek and Roman authors such as Pliny the Younger (61-114) and Plutarch (ca. 46-120) mention some famous collections. Coins were not specified in these private and public collections but they were certainly treasured, like other artworks, on

account of their beauty and material value.

Pliny expresses surprise that forgeries were also studied: "A forged denarius is carefully examined and could cost more than a genuine one."
