Copper was a popular metal to make coins from. Early peoples learned to mine copper from veins of ore. The Roman Republic owned the richest etruscan copper mines in their time which led to their minting the aes grave. These were made out of copper or bronze. Copper and zinc combined make brass. Brass is basically yellow but according to how much zinc is added can tend to be more white or pink. The oldest brass coins were minted in China. Brass was also used in ancient Rome |
to manufacture the sesterce that was minted from 30 BC to 14 AD. A small
bit of lead was then added to the brass. Various metals are added to copper,
for example copper and tin mixed together give bronze. Bronze is the best
metal for moulded
coins as it is easily poured when in liquid form. More information
can be found under bronze,
potin and bell
bronze.
The combination of copper with zinc and nickel become the metal German silver. |
