Drachm, silver, 5.7 g, from
Messina, Sicily, about 500 BC

"Dankle" was the earlier name for Messina, today the third largest
city in Sicily. Dankle (large scythe; shown on the coin in the shape
of the harbour) was founded on the Straits of Messina in the 7th
century BC, and was conquered and destroyed by Carthage in 396 BC.
Messina was the large and important harbour in Sicily which handled
the entire trade from southern Italy to Sicily. The coin shows a
dolphin which is swimming into the harbour and documents the importance
of Greek maritime trade at the time. Because of this flourishing
trade the use of the coins had also spread so rapidly.
