Pfennig or bracteate, silver, 0.48 g, from Überlingen, around 1250

The circulation of bracteates was limited in space and time. The practice of revoking coins, ie each year withdrawing the coins on a certain date from the market and exchanging them for new ones, and then in the relationship of 4:3. This resulted in a whole array of bracteates.
This coin shows a griffon, a fabulous animal, half eagle, half lion. It symbolises vigilance, revenge and wisdom. The often high artistic quality of the bracteates was in stark contrast to their function as short-lived local money.
