I used to ask my students which one of the two coins they liked
better. Both come from Katana, on the east coast of Sicily, and
were minted around 450 BC: Both show a laureate head of Apollo with
the inscription Katanaion. On the right side you see a perfectly
centered and well struck coin, in mint condition. The coin on the
left is not centered, not well-preserved.. Only two letters of the
inscription are visible. But in my opinion, the image of the coin
on the left is a more impressive work of art. I adore this coin,
the other coin I only admire.
