This coin comes from Poseidonia, later called Paestum, the city
with the beautiful Doric temples in South Italy. We see Poseidon
striding to the right. His trident poised behind his head; the inscription
POS standing for Posedonia, is well struck, and beautifully positioned
on its left side. The well formed abdominal muscles and the bone
structure of the upper body are remarkable. The deity is monumental
and is, for me, the most beautiful and best-preserved coin of the
archaic art period.
