Japan as an economic power has not existed for just a few decades. Around the turn of the century, when the industrial states of Europe were consolidating their colonies in Asia and Africa by military force, the Far Eastern island state was the only country with a nonWestern civilisation to succeed in standing up to the major Western powers. Japan's rise to the status of a great power in the Far East was virtually unstoppable.
