While Nikolai is more liberal and open to change, Pavel, as a conservative and aristocrat, is critical of the ideas of the younger generation. The conflict between the generations is particularly reflected in the dialogues between Bazarov and Pavel, which express not only personal convictions but also the wider social tensions of their time.
In his novel, Turgenev shows the incompatibility of the old and new worlds of values. He describes the tragedy of nihilism, which can destroy the existing order but does not replace it with anything constructive. Bazarov's fate is proof of the limits of this world view: despite his sharp mind and intellectual strength, he ultimately fails because of his own convictions and dies of an illness that he cannot prevent.
