At the turn of the 20th century, President Theodore Roosevelt decided to have the American gold coins redesigned. He commissioned the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to draft of the dies. The obverse design of the 20 dollar-coin featured Miss Liberty, the personification of freedom, with a torch and an olive branch in front of the rising sun. On the reverse, the artist had an eagle flying over the sun.
