Sicily, Catane, Tetradrachm

back

Sicily, Catane, Tetradrachm (obverse) Sicily, Catane, Tetradrachm (reverse)

This tetradrachm from Catane shows a horse chariot, imitating the typical coin motif of Syracuse.

The reverse illustrates the head of the Greek god Apollo, Catane's city patron. It is one of the early depictions of Apollo: a high degree of formalism is combined with a new vibrancy – the tension hence produced is typical for the early classical time. This is a rare coin of exquisite beauty.
