With the end of the Weimar Republic in 1933, the German coinage changed fundamentally and lastingly. For since then, silver coins do not circulate any more in Germany. Instead of the silver Weimar reichsmark, the National Socialists minted mark-coins from nickel. And after the fall of the Third Reich (1945), the German coins remained worthless. The 1-mark-pieces of the German Federal Republic were from copper-nickel and those of the German Democratic Republic from aluminum.
