Kingdom of Macedonia, Alexander III, Stater (obverse) Kingdom of Macedonia, Alexander III, Stater (reverse)

This stater by Alexander the Great (336-323 BC) depicts the Greek goddess Athena wearing a Corinthian helmet on the obverse. The reverse shows Nike, the Greek personification of victory.

One of Alexander's greatest achievements was the establishment of a single currency in his huge realm. These 'imperial coins' replaced the wide variety of local issues. Only the Romans managed to establish a universal currency in their empire again.
