After the First World War (1914-1918), the Swiss federal council decided to issue new 5-franc pieces to overcome the prevailing lack of silver coins. Since the crest and the head of Helvetia on the old 5-franc coins had always been an animadversion for heraldists, the Swiss government decided to link the new issue with a new coin motif. The design of the dairyman became highly popular and embellishes the Swiss 5-franc coin up to this day.
