This half duplone from the city of Berne shows on the obverse the crowned Bernese crest and the legend RESPUBLICA BERNENSIS. The warrior on the reverse is a "reisläufer," a mercenary, of which Berne sent thousands into foreign services. The legend is DEUS PROVIDEBIT, "God will provide." The coin was minted in 1797, one year before the fall of the Old Swiss Confederation and the following erection of the Helvetic Republic.
