Justin II had never been actual successor to the Byzantine throne. Yet he became emperor without any difficulties after the death of Justinian in the year 565. He owed this not least to his position as curopalate, as 'manager of the palace.' As such he was the first to be informed about the death of Emperor Justinian, and could act immediately.
Supposedly his wife Sophia played an important role in Justin's coronation. She was the niece of the late empress Theodora, and thus familiar with life and the intrigues of the imperial court.
