Rottweil is a very old city, dating back to the 70's BC when it was a Roman settlement. In the Early Middle Ages the town developed into a significant court and administrative center, and in addition Rottweil was a royal mint. This bracteate was struck in Rottweil in the first half of the 14th century. It features an eagle for the Holy Roman Empire; at that time it was Louis IV the Bavarian (1314-1347).
