This gold gulden was minted by the Hungarian King Louis the Great of Anjou (1342-1382). The king simply copied the coins of the trading city of Florence. The obverse depicts the lily, the emblem of Florence, and the reverse shows John the Baptist, Florence's city saint. Later, the lily was replaced by the coat of arms of Hungary-Anjou (the House of Anjou being the ruling dynasty in Hungary during the 14th century), and John the Baptist by St. Ladislas. This gulden is one of the earlier issues, however, and except for the inscription on the obverse – LODOVICI REX – hardly distinguishable from the Florentine originals.
