The People's Migration brought the end of their world for the inhabitants of the Western Roman Empire. In 410, Germanic tribes sacked Rome. With this disappeared the only power in western Europe that had hitherto issued coins.

The coin prerogative passed on to the leaders of the diverse Germanic tribes. They adopted the coinage of the Eastern Roman Empire by simply copying the well-known and popular coins of the Byzantine emperors.

This solidus was minted during the reign of Clovis I (481-511). The obverse features the Byzantine emperor Anastasius (491-518), and the reverse shows the goddess of victory, Victoria Augusta.
