Lübeck had always been a commercial harbour town, exchanging goods with eastern and northern Europe. It had been given the privilege to mint gold coins by King Louis of Bavaria in 1340 already. Louis also made the town imitate the Florentine florin, because he demanded that the Lübeck gold coins were to be geared after the Florentine fiorino d'oro in weight and value.
