Kingdom of Hungary, Béla II, Denarius (Pfennig) (obverse) Kingdom of Hungary, Béla II, Denarius (Pfennig) (reverse)

Béla II wore the byname 'the blind', as he had been blinded as a baby by his uncle, the Hungarian King Coloman. In this way Coloman had tried to secure the throne for his own son Stephen. Three years after Béla's blinding Coloman died, and Stephen followed him on the throne. He was obviously less hardboiled than his father, for he took Béla into care and, having no children of his own, made him his heir. Thus in 1131 Béla the Blind ascended to the Hungarian throne, which he occupied for ten years. This pfennig was issued during Béla II's reign. Ot shows the king with a stylized crown.
