Sicily, Acragas, Dilitron

Sicily, Acragas, Dilitron (obverse) Sicily, Acragas, Dilitron (reverse)

On this coin's obverse we see an eagle standing on a rock and tearing up a snake. The reverse features a crab. Due to those distinctive motifs, the coin can easily be identified as a mint of Acragas, today's city of Agrigento in Sicily. Acragas was located on a high plateau that was surrounded by water; this is what the eagle and the crab stand for.

Noteworthy are also the two pellets underneath the eagle. They indicate the value of the coin as a dilitron, a 2-litrae coin.
