Initially the emission of so-called "ship guldiners" was produced for circulation in the Dutch possessions on the Cape of Good Hope. However, after the British had occupied the Cape Colony in 1795, the coins could not be unloaded from the ships. Hence they were shipped to Batavia (today's Jakarta), were they were declared legal tender in 1803.
