Roman Republic, Anonymous Quartuncia (obverse) Roman Republic, Anonymous Quartuncia (reverse)

The quartuncia, a quarter of an uncia, was the smallest value in the Roman monetary system. It was minted only rarely and only over a short period of time, namely between about 222 BC and 200 BC.

On the obverse, the quartuncia bore Bellona, the ancient Roman goddess of war. Bellona's image proclaimed Rome's readiness for warfare even on the smallest every-day-coppers. The reverse of the quartuncia showed the word ROMA and the bow of a ship, a prora.
