This gulden is an issue of the Bavarian King Louis I (1825-1848). This king was swept off his throne by his own people in the year of revolution, 1848: While the aging king spent large sums for the costly lifestyle of his mistress Lola Montez, his subjects were starving. In February 1848 in Munich, public feelings exploded with the shout "the whore must go!" Rage about the expensive royal affair connected with the demand for a "single and free fatherland." After severe fights, Louis had to abdicate.
