The 50-rappens coin is a hybrid. Even though it does indicate its value as ½ Fr., it is never referred to as "half franc," but always as "fiftier" or as 50-rappens. It is smaller, thinner and lighter than the 20- and 10-rappens coins, yet it bears the same motif as the coins of 1- and 2-francs. This is because the 50-rappens, just as the 1- and 2-francs and the 5-francs, are made from silver until 1967. The coins of lower values, on the other hand, never contain precious metals.
