Because bronze and brass were used for military purposes during the Second World War (1939-1945), the minting of bronze and brazen penny-coins was abandoned in Germany in 1939. Instead, zinc-coins worth 1, 5 or 10 pennies were issued; in 1942, the old coins of 1, 2, 5 and 10 pfennig were entirely replaced by zinc-pennies.
