As from 1953, the Federal Republic of Germany issued several commemorative coins in irregular intervals. They were legal tender but hardly ever used in every day circulation. This silver piece is a remembrance coin on the 200th anniversary of the mathematician, astronomer and physicist Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss (*1777, †1855).
