The diocese of Halberstadt dates back to efforts of Charlemagne to proselytize the Saxons. Later, in 980, the relics of Holy Stephan of Metz were brought to Halberstadt. Because Stephan was considered to have been the first Christian martyr, his name day was set at the 2nd of January; with it commence twelve days of frost, which follow the day of Jesus Christ's birth.
