Congo, Katanga Cross

back

Congo, Katanga Cross (obverse) Congo, Katanga Cross (reverse)

From time out of mind and until today, copper ore is produced in Katanga in today’s Democratic Republic of Congo. Already before the arrival of the Europeans in the 15th century crosses were cast from this material. In this form the copper was traded all across Africa. Even though no weight standard can be determined, those crosses were used in large parts of Central Africa as means of payment for a wide variety of purchases.
