back

Roman Empire, Antoninus Pius, Aureus (obverse) Roman Empire, Antoninus Pius, Aureus (reverse)

Adopted by Emperor Hadrian on his deathbed and appointed as emperor, Antoninus Pius' reign started with major problems, because the Roman senate initially refused allegiance. Finally, Antoninus managed to establish himself – to the benefit of Rome, since his long reign was marked by peace and prosperity (138-161).

This aureus sows the bust of Antoninus Pius on the obverse, while the reverse depicts him as full-length portrait. The emperor is clad in a toga and holding a scroll in his right hand and a globe in his left.
