Slovenia introduced the euro on January 1, 2007. The European Union took the opportunity to redesign the common obverse of the euro coins. Instead of the former 15 old union member states the revised coins now bore the geographical outlines of Europe.

The national faces of the Slovenian euros are all different. The 20-cent coin features a pair of Lipizzaner horses with the inscription 'Lipicanec' (Lipizzaner). This old Slovenian horse breed is known especially for its use at the Spanish Riding School of Vienna. Lipizzaner are also the stars in the Disney movie 'Miracle of the White Stallions' that shows their evacuation from the Russian zone after World War II.
