In the Middle Ages, most people were unable to read. This is why many coin authorities tried to let the designs on their coins speak for themselves. This pfennig from the German town of Lindau accordingly depicts a branch from a linden tree. Like this, contemporaries knew immediately, where the coin had been issued. The linden twig in this way became the emblem of the town.
