Roman Empire, Bronze Unit, Imitation in the Name of Julian II (obverse) Roman Empire, Bronze Unit, Imitation in the Name of Julian II (reverse)

This bronze piece is an reproduction of a coin issued by Julian II, who reigned the Roman Enpire in the second half of the 4th century AD. It was the time of the People's Migration: the Roman Empire suffered from confrontations with immigrants from central Eastern Europe trying to gain new homes in the west. Julian led extensive campaigns against the invaders, thereby penetrating deep into their territories. His coins spread in his legions' wake, and in this way the migrating peoples came for the first time in contact with coined money.

Its usefulness must quickly have occurred to them, because soon several of the migrating peoples started to copy Julian's coins. This small bronze coin is such an imitation.
