Vandal Empire, Gunthamund, 100 Denari (obverse) Vandal Empire, Gunthamund, 100 Denari (reverse)

After 429, the Germanic tribe of the Vandals established an independent Germanic kingdom in North Africa, on the soil of the Roman Empire. After Roman example, they minted their own money there. Purposefully, they produced it in traditional stile: Vandal coins were to be reminiscent of the old, familiar Roman money. At the same time, the Vandals introduced a significant innovation, namely the indication of value on the coins. This piece of 100 denarii portrays King Gunthamund (484-496) on the obverse. The reverse shows a laurel wreath surrounding the denomination, the letters D N on top of a C.
