The Lydian king Croesus (c. 560-546 BC) is not so much remembered for his development of a bimetallic currency today, but for his legendary wealth. Yet Croesus was the first to introduce a system of diverse gold and silver denominations in a fixed relation among each other. This is a hecte, a coin worth a sixth of a stater.
