Mesopotamia, Cuneiform Foundation Cone, Clay (obverse) Mesopotamia, Cuneiform Foundation Cone, Clay (reverse)

This clay cone, covered with a dedicatory inscription in cuneiform writing, commemorates the building of a house. In Mesopotamia such cones were prepared by scribes and embedded in the walls of important buildings. The text was hidden inside the wall ľ only the gods should be able to read them. The text of this cone reads, "For Ninigivsu, the mighty warrior of Enlab, from his master Gudea, ruler of Lagasch, who also built Enninu (i. e. temple) and also Ep´eub-imin."
