The discovery of gold and diamonds was of paramount economic and political importance for South Africa. That was the reason why Cecil Rhodes, prime minister of the Cap colonies from 1890 to 1896, wanted to reintroduce these areas to British rule. The British conquered Orange Free State and Transvaal in the socalled Buren-Wars. This medal commemorates the first finds of gold in Transvaal.
