Portraits on Coins Antiquity

back

The first human being who dared to have his individual features presented on coins was Tissaphernes (c. 445-395 BC), a Persian nobleman and satrap of Lydia. Other Persian sovereigns soon followed his example; but in the western world, it would take some more time until the portrait appeared on coins. This is be the subject of this coin tour.
