Belgium is located in the border area between Germanic and Latin Europe. The country is thus the home of two linguistic groups, the Dutch-speaking Flemings and the French-speaking Walloons. They live more or less separated in the two halves of the country – with the capital of Brussels as a bilingual center in-between. The linguistic and cultural division of Belgium is the cause for tensions up to this day. The royal dynasty is often seen as the only common thread. This coin shows Albert I who was King of Belgium from 1909 to 1934. The piece bears a Dutch inscription; identical coins with a French legend were issued at the same time.
