This so-called wheel coin, or rouelle, was found in La Tène, an excavation site on the shore of Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland. Until now about 2,500 artifacts from the late Iron Age were discovered at this site – the time from about 450 BC to the Roman conquest at the end of the 1st century BC.

Along with traditional coins, many of the burial sites in La Tène also included such ring coins. It is questionable, however, whether these pieces had indeed monetary character. In fact, they were probably rather used as lucky charms.
