Persian Empire, Achaemenids, Artaxerxes I, Siglos (obverse) Persian Empire, Achaemenids, Artaxerxes I, Siglos (reverse)

This silver siglos was supposedly minted around 440 BC and is therefore likely to have been issued by the Persian Great King Artaxerxes I (464-425 BC). Invariably for over 50 years, from the introduction of the siglos and the daric, the obvese of these coins depicted the archer. The weight of the Persian coins, the means of paying mercenaries in Asia Minor (in today's western Turkey), remained unchanged too.
