The inscription on the edge of this coin is characteristic for the mindset of the French King Charles X (1824-1830): DOMINE SALV(u)M FAC REGEM it says in Latin language: "God Save the King." On the coins of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, on the other hand, the edge inscription had been DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE – "God save France." At that time, God had thus been asked to look over the whole of France, while now, he was to serve Charles alone. Gold coins like this one were of no relevance for most people in France at that time. They were mainly issued for international trade, and besides served as savings for the prosperous.
