Finland became a republic in 1917. Before that time, it was a Great Duchy under the wing of the Russian Empire. The coins of the Republic of Finland always bore the lion's crest on their obverse. Since the introduction of the euro in 2001, the lion is depicted in a new design on the national sides of the Finnish euro coins.
