This gros was issued by Thierry V de Boppard (1365-1384), bishop of Metz. Its obverse depicts Saint Stephen (Saint Etienne in French), the city saint of Metz, and patron of the Metz Cathedral. Such gros were minted from 1365 to 1383. Then, bishop Thierry, being in economic difficulties, sold his minting prerogative for 4,000 écus d'or to the city of Metz.
