In 1914, at the dawn of the First World War, Germany moved to a paper currency. Gold and silver coins remained in circulation. Yet, until 1917, the number of coins in circulation dropped significantly. People hoarded even the smallest copper coins, to say nothing of silver or gold. As from 1916, coins from lead, aluminum and zinc were struck. This 10-penny-coin is made from lead.
