This dinar was struck in Sana'a, the ancient city in Yemen. From around 250 AH (864 AD), the weight of the Yemenite dinars was significantly lower than that of the other Abbasid gold coins, whose normal weight lay around 4.2 grams. Perhaps in Yemen dinars were struck after an independent weight standard, or the pieces represented 2/3 or even 1/2 values, although the inscriptions identified them as dinars.
