Bronze axe heads served as money all over Mesoamerica from the 9th to the 16th centuries. Over time they developed into purely symbolic forms that were useless as every day tools. People used them not only for daily shopping, but also to pay taxes and tributes. Besides they were used in a ritual context, for example as funerary objects.
