Ethiopia, Amole Salt Bar

Ethiopia, Amole Salt Bar (obverse) Ethiopia, Amole Salt Bar (reverse)

Amole salt bar money from Ethiopia owes its popularity to its double use as means of exchange and as raw material. On local markets they are traded until today. Paying with amoles is somewhat inconvenient, however, because the bars have to be measured, weighed and checked for damages and hollow spaces. Their value depends on the season and on the geographical position of the markets. The greater the distance from the salt mines, the more expensive they are.
